On the way to Popgasm – Interview with Samu Haber of Sunrise Avenue

sunrise avenue1-publishing1In less than half a decade, Sunrise Avenue has achieved what most of the new Finnish pop-rock bands just dream about: an astonishing international success with a second studio album just recently released into the market: Popgasm. Samu Haber, their charismatic lead singer, had time while travelling around Germany to kindly answer our questions and give opinions about the superfast growth of the band, the expectations for the future or the internal painful changes that they experienced when Janne did not continue with them.

Hello Samu and thanks a lot for answering our questions. What can you tell us about the new second album of the band Popgasm? Any favorite tracks?

Well… sure you have your favorite tracks but since we made all the songs on PopGasm with the guys, all the songs are like our babies and therefore it’s impossible to rank them that clear. Maybe Welcome to My Life is the track if I have to pick one. It’s such an honest description of my life.

Was it easier now to work again together with producer Jukka Backlund?

Working with Jukka is never easy, but that is the catch ;) He is a personality that flies around the room and you just gotta wait for the results to come out from him. Sure we knew us better now but getting too close to the producer is not always only a good thing. It’s a great thing that he left the band and is now focusing on production.

You got an amazing success with your debut album. Do you feel now like being “on the way to wonderland” in real life? Were you expecting so many good sales and audience’s response when you started with the band?

No, honestly I didn’t. I was hoping that music could become as my career and it did. But it got far bigger than I ever let myself dream. Sure I believed that if all the winds blow our way, we could go very far, just like now with the second album. But it’s always up to 50 % luck anyway, so the best you can do is do your best and see what comes.

sunriseavenue2-publishing2

Every month dozens of new Finnish rock bands release their debut albums. The market is overcrowded. What is the formula and advices you can give to connect so quickly and successfully with the public as Sunrise Avenue did from the beginning?

There is no recipe. You just gotta try hard and try to make your own thing. The copy-cats who copy bands that are already famous, are pathetic.

Getting such doses of fame and recognition in such a relatively short period of time… Do you notice that has affected you in any way as human being? I mean, do you have the case that friends or relatives could tell you things like “now you are an asshole and you have changed a lot”, or do you think you keep your feet on the earth as a good Finn?

No. Not really. Some of the people you used to know want to have a little piece of your success and the story by hanging next to you at the clubs but I personally hate those wannabe’s. They wanna introduce you to all their friends and they think it’s cool. Sad. The REAL friends haven’t changed their behavior at all and that is something that makes me really happy.  And if I’d ever start behaving like a “super star” I know my real friends would kick my ass BIG time! That is their job in all this and I know they’d do it for my own best.

You released a live DVD Live in Wonderland shot in Germany during your first tour. Was not risky to launch such a product with only one studio album released? Why you did not want to wait longer to do it?

Risk… This business is only full of risky moves. I think the experience was extremely great for all of us and actually I guess the DVD made it pretty ok in the stores too.

In the DVD “Live in Wonderland” I remember there was a comment that alcohol was not allowed during the tour for the members. Is that true? Do you have “dry” law when touring, or was more a joke? Who drinks the most at the band?

That was just a joke. We don’t actually party on tour because that would make the next day’s show pretty painful. But at the end of the tour there’s usually the “GRANDE FINALE” party. And that is something we need to have. Between show days I usually have a glass of wine and go to bed.

I just read in your tour blog that you smashed your head in the Provinssirock gig. How is your forehead looking now?

It looks amazingly good. I just removed the stitches last night and you can barely notice the scratch because I have my hair on it. I will have a memory from Provinssi Rock 2009 forever on my face. That’s cool.

You seem to enjoy writing and sharing thoughts through Internet with the audience. Do you find all the free time you need to write? What other hobbies do you have when you are not on the road?

I usually write the blogs on the plane. You have nothing but time there and I write stuff in the air and then go through it quickly at home. It had become this kind of as therapy thing for me. I sleep better if I let out everything that has happened the last few days. I love sports. I try to go to gym 5 times a week. Also team sports. Ice Hockey is the best. Unfortunately there’s not that much time for that now.

“Janne out of the band was the hardest decision I have ever made” – Samu Haber -

I know the band is pretty big in Germany, and I suppose you are thankful to the fans there, but what other venues do you especially like to visit when playing? And in what places would you like to tour but still have not had the chance?

Yes, the Germans have been very nice to as at least so far. We love to play anywhere where they want to hear us. We have had super great experiences all over and we have learned that the good and loud audience can be waiting for you anywhere.

We had an interview with the ex-member of Sunrise Avenue Janne Kärkkäinen. Maybe it is a topic you do not want to talk much about, but with the perspective of time, is there anything you want to comment about his leave from the band? Have you had the chance to listen to his new project Phoenix Effect?

It was the hardest decision I have ever made and it hurt me like hell before and especially after. I was really broken for more than a year and I am very thankful for the people who stood by me and us. Everything is much better as a team and also musically in the band now. I just wish the guy could grow up and accept what happened. It’s been 2 years. I have only heard “Broken Promises” but sure it’s pretty hard for me to evaluate his stuff without feelings being mixed. I honestly wish Janne and Phoenix Effect all the best from the bottom of my heart.

sunrise avenue 3-publishing3

I heard that the tattoo you have that says “Forever Yours” was due to a relation with a girl that did not work out. Is that true? How was the story? Do you think that you would do something like that again for another girl? Yep. The tattoo was a replacement for an engagement ring. I don’t like rings and it doesn’t feel natural to wear one when I play the guitar. Yep, we were supposed to get married and all, but it went bad. We are luckily good friends now with her. I am just happy I didn’t tattoo her name on me. I hope I find someone someday who is worth another tattoo ;)

What are your future plans?

Now we are just promoting the new stuff and playing all the shows through the summer. Then in October we will start our European tour again and I guess that will go on until early next year with a break around the New Year, I hope.

Anything you want to add for the readers or that you would like me to have asked you?

Just the fact that I am writing the answers on a German highway and the speed is 230Km/hour.

Q&A with Samu Haber

sunriseavenue4-publishing4

Favorite gig played ever that you remember? There has been so many so special. Maybe the first 5 shows with the new album now in Helsinki, Berlin, Zurich, Athens and Helsinki again. It made me believe that maybe not everybody has forgotten Sunrise avenue.

If you would not play with Sunrise Avenue, is there any other band you would like to have been a member of?

I can’t imagine anything else. This is the group I started when I was 16, so I will stick with it.

Craziest thing that has happened to you on and off stage?

I must say the craziest thing on stage is a few weeks ago when I smashed my own face with my own guitar. I seem to have a few more steps to become a pro ;)    Off stage this 40+ drunken “lady” squeezed my balls very hard and it hurt like hell. I told her to bring her boyfriend to me because I don’t hit women… The boyfriend never came. I was very embarrassed afterwards but there’s a limit with everything. Even with me.

Do you think that is possible to reach an orgasm due to pop music?

I do. I have had it many times ;) Just relax and it’ll come.

Nicest thing that a fan has told you or done for you?

The guy who sold his house in the early days so we could pay for the studios. I will always owe one for Mr. Mikko Virtala.

Favorite place to chill out in Finland?

Our summerhouse. No internet, no phones. Just the nature and the family. You can be 110% yourself and nobody wants anything from you. I also love my home / house very much.

What sentence in Finnish language would you choose first to teach a foreigner?

“Ei se oo niin justiinsa” it means everything doesn’t have to be perfect. I love the phrase.

How many languages can you speak?

I speak Finnish & English pretty well; I can survive in Spanish and Swedish and a little German.

Samu Haber from Sunrise Avenue

de.hr.cms.servlet.IMS

Samu Haber is the favorite of many young women! 1.93 meters tall, long blonde hair, blue eyes – a very nice young man, who also still plays guitar, writes songs and lead singer in a band is very popular: Sunrise Avenue!

Samu is a bit tired, he came straight from Vienna, he shows his forehead and told how he himself with the guitar has violated his head bled terribly, the wound had to be sewn. The threads were being pulled, a scar will always him to a festival in Finland remember.

It is almost three years ago, Sunrise Avenue in another occupation were here. Eight months later, “Fairytale gone bad” a huge hit. The accompanying album “On the way to wonderland” has sold more than 500,000 times. And now there is the second album: “Popgasm”.

“I’m Doctor Haber and I have a Popgasm Hospital!” And what do you do there please? “People are out, not just a style of music to love, but good music,” says Samu.

If the first album has sold so well as “On the way to wonderland”, then you want that the second even better sold. This can be understood Samu. But he can not understand when rumors and headlines in the world, in order to remain in conversation. “If music as a band and we do not meet, then that’s the – I left my guitar and I can not take.”
He believes in the record company, he himself would have no problem if the new album only sold 60,000 times, but he understands the pressure that is everywhere in the world, the fear and concern. Samu stresses the importance of the fun is, for the money, he is not the music. He wants to play live and just be himself.

Due to personal and musical differences had the band in 2007 guitarist and founding member Janne Kärkkäinen disconnect. Instead it is now Riku Rajamaas here. “It was not easy, but I had to make that decision … It was the hardest decision of my life,” says Samu. Whether the name “Sunrise Avenue” can stay, a court ruled. And on 1 October 2008, the keyboardist Jukka Backlund announced that he would leave the band. The concert on 18 October 2008 was his last because he is on his career as a producer wants to concentrate. At an appearance in March 2009 presented their new Sunrise Avenue Live keyboarder Osmo Ikonen.

Samu is funny: he rolls the “r” so happy when he “verrrrri nice” or says “Jürrrrrrgen Rasperrrrrrr”. German can also be a bit: he can “paracetamol” saying, “Drummer”, “call me” and “sky, twisting and ass.” His father is German and Samu says “I’m half German.” For now, it is fun to have, but he is also thoughtful than before, he says quite clearly what he wants and what he imagines.

At the end he says: “I promise we will meet again. One way or another.”

Sunrise Avenue – were rejected by 102 producers …

Founded in 2002 in Finland, the band was forced to fight the prejudices of producers! Just Jukka Backlund, who were then joined on keyboards, had faith in their lucky star …

Why do not we have the 102, when Sunrise Avenue broke pop charts with songs like “All Because Of You,” “Romeo” and “Fairytale Gone Bad” even before the debut album release.

But we are sure that Jukka, which recorded debut album, even before he had a contract with the label, not only welcomes …

Their debut album “On The Way To Wonderland” won, only a few months since launch, disc gold in Finland. Year 2007 has brought them even more popular: in January won four categories at NRJ Radio Awards, the Nordic equivalent of Grammy Awards.

A month later, the boys claimed a miniturneu in five German cities – but tickets are already epuizasera in November 2006!

In March, Sunrise Avenue won the first Grammy award in the same evening they celebrated getting platinum disk in Finland. In months of launching the album in Sweden, it already achieved gold disc … By summer, they added portfolio and gold discs in Germany and Switzerland.

It makes only one year since launch, Samu Haber, Jann Karkkainen, Jukka Backlund and Raul Ruutu have already entered the competition in MTV Europe Music Awards 2007. The next step to success is winning trophy, which would bring a representative broadcast live across Europe, the scene MTV Europe Music Awards.

Success of which have covered the four boys have been discovered a source brawl, but the audience is delighted by their naturalness. “From the beginning, which he differentiated us was that we did not play a role. We are what we are and always do what we do with all my heart, otherwise, why would we bother?” Says Samu Haber firm, band guitarist.

Another source of which could have been born of their success would be that the four have prescription Beatles – in the sense that each plays his instrument, and voice. “Is that what made the Beatles what Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters are good years. It is not the day fashion but music, which will work as well today and tomorrow and over ten years,” says Haber.

“When you’re on stage, there is never about life or death. If one person enters the atmosphere, is perfect! If we feel good enough! And if a hundred people sit with hands in the air, then — wow! But for us, that support the live concerts is enough to make us happy! course moments when we think if we could get something …

But this feeling disappears every time I get on stage and smile zarim a boy or a girl. When you see it, and convince us that our music means something, “explains Haber.

Another advantage of boys is given by the relationship between members. Each of them has been assigned a role well-established guitarist and bassist Raul Jann – to take care of everything that is web and sound systems, voice-guitarist Samu – write songs, all of the task was entrusted to represent the band as a leader (and he founded the band in 2002).

Jukka is not responsible for the production and drummer Sami take care of just fell in its own tool …
Although it seems that things were well in place, but do not think that the band was free of inconveniences.

On 17 August 2007, Samu Haber fired at the guitarist Jann Karkkainen, at which he founded the band in 2002. None of the members and no Jann did not much on this topic. The official site, Samu posted some kind of explanation, which shows only a bad opinion that led to this.

“A band is very complex. It’s like a marriage between members, is more than see and hear people from outside. Sometimes troops spend months im-preuna, day and night and of course, that all the troops and we had quarrels and silly nonsense. In this case it’s not who sit near windows in the car.

It was something that lasts from the first song recorded in studio. The reason I was able to stick together so long has been the success that I’ve met with great support of our fans, but now, not even gold awards are no longer sufficient to cover the pain and help you along …

Nobody did anything wrong and that in many other relationships that end, nobody was to blame. Simply we were unable to make music in the atmosphere created. Simply see things from different points of view and never reach any results. I know that outside is indeed hard to understand, but I bet you all understand that no one would be kicked out without a reason. “

Sunrise Avenue is already seeking a new guitarist. This change will not affect European tour in October and November, as they hire a guitarist until it be determined on a specific person, the right to be a member of the band. Samu and promises that he will announce as soon as the fans will decide.

Here is a new article from Metropoli

06 / 2009 – Sunrise Avenue pop-orgasm

Sunrise Avenue rose from nowhere and made a perfect hat-trick. At first no one believed in them and the many record companies turned their backs. Until finally, uncompromising perseverance and a four-year battle was awarded a world record deal. Again, it does not chipped with a special quality of civil courage, her debut album was completed self. From this point on the band’s story has been as directly to the fairy tale book. In 2006 the band won the newcomer Emma, and in 2007 haalittiin already in the export award. The tight work Sunrise Avenue received throughout the knees and the year in January 2008 the band released for European Boarder Breaker Award. They have just received a second album Popgasm, which was published on 6 May. Expectations are all over the high.

Long-job performance

- Cliche second album seems to be true. Making it took a total of 14 months, which seems a long period of time. The first album went so well that the thought of the time, whether or not all good enough. It was a little like the nest fallen woodpecker boy feeling. Hopefully, the disc you will not go on this any more complicated, the band’s keulahahmo Samu Haber says.
- Valehtelisin if it would not be a reflection on how the songs may be possible, but no clear hitinhakuisuutta it was not. The disc has 14 songs and all is not a goal to make any hits. It is more a producer of chores to consider them. If this world is to think, which is a sure hit, so people do not buy that. It must be accompanied by the soul and the right thing. I believe that music is in all its main role. Not shite music to thrive, at least for very long.

Great expectations

- Expectations in the disc are hard. I do not even want to know what EMI calls for Europe to sell. Yes, they certainly time for the big numbers to speak. Recently my goal was to sell the gold in Finland, and to obtain the contract abroad. We were sold platinum in Finland and it was a deal abroad. How is it now, it remains to be seen. After all, it is wonderful that we are considered to be Finland’s export product. When we go well, all are standing behind, but the disc flopatessa public opinion can turn against. The same reason, Oulu carp endorsed so far in Helsinki, they won the championship. It is great if we have the chance, but I am real happy in my life, if you’re to continue at this level. We can be nice to play at festival gigs in Finland and elsewhere, and will work on behalf of reissaa up around Europe. What else I could ask?

All off the handlebars

- To venture on this disc already fall far enemmin, in good all the way off the handlebars. The first disc is a forever love, and I am really proud of it, but it lacked a certain way with humor and a kind of courage. Popgasmista is that we have been a little more courage, and by a ylisynkkyys is gone. Melancholia fortunately found, but wanted to show it to one side. Surprise, showed that it also works with bells on stage. The disc is accompanied by a very bold bets, the pot sounds and string players, as well as the effects of different tricks. Our task is to bring out fresh stuff and jengille good feeling. It is not intended to go directly to copy others, or to repeat the same patterns.
- Now, when you have trained a live set, so it was, how good the disc we have. A little over an hour-long presentation may be much more drama than the cycle before. Yes, the album also emanates that is being played the hundreds of live gigs. It is also at the same time much more stripped than the previous album. Track This is about half of the last, there is nothing tuplauskitaroita or terribly overcrowded stuff. It is hell, compact package, which is a good thing.
- The album title came quite by chance, when there was a shaving mass producer Jukka Back Lund: the report I wanted to drive a sweet name, not just talk the secondary board, someone popmusiikin orgasm. From there, it is well up: Popgasmi. A few album tracks have been produced together with a Swedish Macho Psycho-crew, who have worked ralleja for example, for the Pink. Of these, one is now a rotating radio The Whole Story.

The previous disc Sunrise Avenue have also experienced some changes in the crew. – Back Lund Jukka was just the producer’s role, because the time was not enough for anything. Were two years ago to distinguish our guitarist Janne Kärkkäinen, which the media was too much of a story. It is the same, when marriages break down. We wanted to but slightly different things. It will consult now well on its own Janne Phoenix Effect project. It is time for Seattle-roots of rock music, when we again made between such leikiteltyä sound of a black art, for example, lauluefektiä confu. It can be quite good when it has the freedom to make their own stuff. Always it is a quarrelsome, when such poppoosta will have to give to one of the chuck. Not that anyone is elated.
On stage almost naked
- Then guitarist dismissal time, we took a week resting holiday in Spain. I was real anxious about the guitarist thing. I do not recall terror of that whole week, was so full hair all the time. We went from there due to appear in Switzerland to large festivals, just a vittumaiseen sunset. Elk weeks after the tube darra puski on. Walking on stage, I was quite sure that I die. It was just stupid hot day. I remember it, but the water bottle, which hehkui heat black on stage. Terrible fear of space, when 50 000 people staring at you and I had terrible panic attacks.
- Mun was initially forced to take shirt off, even though hävetti, when it was so swollen dokauksen the week after. After that I began stripping, but were forced to undress all clothes away. Finally, the ground was the only boxer shorts, which also was the last trip, and probably once used. Monitoring beltpack obviously dropped all the time boxereita down, and persvako flashes. Gig was entered pictures are pretty bad looking. Kessi gasping, swollen face and quite red in color when burned yet at the same time. It was really terrible, but these occur between paremmissakin circles.

Kiivastahtinen promotional tour

Popgasmin since the publication of the disc begins with a promotion tour, which lasts a total of six weeks. – Screw up much time the two of guitarist Rikun with the radio station to another. The timetable has been busy. When one of the city of Vienna is one day to go, they ymppäävät it all possible. There is not enough time for anything else. I do not even really remember how many countries would be rotated. Will take place in Tokyo and travel to Europe. Japan is the first time. It was released our first album in November, and now second at the same time with other people. I trust the sun to rise in March, and Sunrise Avenue – it will be forced to act.
- The summer is then authorization nice bets festival in Finland and abroad. We can, for example, the first time, the Rock got Province. It has been a long-standing dream. Kind of scalp, which must be met. Two things are lacking, which are the favorite cover and Provinssirock. Now they both have achieved and I can die in peace. Favorite reading the cover yet MR asshole, which is in fact yes.
